About

The pieces here are a combination of restoration, reupholstery, and new designs formed from discarded and salvaged materials.

This work represents my commitment to more sustainable living practices through the refashioning of older materials to newer purposes. The process of transforming them into new pieces is intended to show just how much possibility there can be in many of the things that we habitually throw away. I do not simply flip pieces, they are all carefully restored and repurposed, sometimes waiting for the right detail or component in order to be finished. As a result, many are one-off pieces that may never be repeated. Reflecting my passions for science, art and design, history and memory, these are distinctive and unique objects with a rich sense of character and a deep hint of mystery.

It is vitally important that we reframe our understanding of what sustainability actually means; in very real terms, the most sustainable materials are those that already exist. My passion for working with salvaged and discarded materials is not simply about recycling waste, but a necessary recognition of the obligations we all must share to limit the damage caused by our often unthinking consumption. A shift towards a more circular production economy may go some way towards better managing our finite resources in the present and guaranteeing a future worth sharing by all.

After a lifetime of family stories of hardship, famine and struggle, I still cannot bear to see precious materials going to waste. There is life yet to be lived in many of these pieces, and, for now, the sun still shines.
